Successful awards night in Blackwater Community School, Lismore

The annual academic awards took place recently at Blackwater Community School, Lismore.

The annual academic awards took place recently at Blackwater Community School, Lismore to recognise the great achievements of students in their state exams and also the achievements of many members of our community in making our area a better place to be. Scholarships and gold medals were presented to students of Leaving Cert and special awards to those who help out in our area.

ACADEMIC SCHOLARSHIPS

This year’s recipients were: The Education scholarship, Patron Barron’s Bakery Cappoquin was awarded to Shauna Humphries. The Science Scholarship, Patron Michael McGrath was awarded to Seamus Hyland. The Physics Scholarship, Patron Mary Fenton Morrissey was awarded to Mark Leddy. The Business Scholarship, Patron Kelleher’s SuperValu, Cappoquin was awarded to Bryan Hanrahan. The Journalism Scholarship, Patron Neil Twomey was awarded to Emily Ahearne. The Psychology Scholarship, Patron Dr Barry Lordan was awarded to Chris Coughlan. The Memorial Kieran Fenton Scholarship for Endeavour, Patron Mary FM was awarded to Regina Walsh. The Memorial Eric Flynn Engineering Scholarship, Patron the Flynn and Morrissey families was awarded to Stephen Hale. The Memorial John and Judy Ring Scholarship for Actuarial Science, Patron the Ring family was awarded to John Ring. The Memorial Kitty Luskin Scholarship for Nursing, Patron the Luskin family was awarded to Lorna Cullen. The Memorial Dermott and Pat Cantillon Medical Studies Scholarship, Patron the Cantillon family was awarded to Harriett Bennett Lenane.

GOLD MEDALS

The gold medals went to: The Memorial English Gold medal in memory of Tony Bolger and Jack McCarthy, Patron the McCarthy and Bolger families went to Harriet Bennett Lenane. Gold medal for Art, Patron Arthur Maderson went to Jessica Haynes. Gold medal for Chemistry, Patron Don and Michelle Hanrahan went to John Ring. Gold medal for Biology, Patron Mari Mina Pharmacy went to Harriet Bennett Lenane.

Gold medal for Design, Graphics and Communications, Patron Printmaster went to Steven O’Donoghue. Gold medal for Physics, Patron Dr Noreen Barry went to John Ring. Gold medal for Business, Patron Richmond House went to Harriet Bennett Lenane. Gold medal for Music, Patron Willie and Laura Roche went to Emily Ahearne. Gold medal in Social and Scientific, Patron Ollie Wilkinson went to Aoife Power. Gold medal for Applied Maths, Patron Lismore and Cappoquin Credit Union went to John Ring. Gold medal for Construction Studies, Patron Michael O’Leary went to Pat Hennessy.

Gold medal for Engineering, Patron Tallow Area Credit Union went to Eoin Condon. Gold medal for Accounting, Patron Tony Glavin went to John Ring. Gold medal for Agricultural Science, Patron Sean and Daphne Power went to Ellen O’Donoghue. Gold medal for History, Patron Foley’s on the Mall went to Bryan Hanrahan. Gold medal for German, Patron Joern Wiebe went to John Ring.

Gold medal for Geography, Patron the Past Pupils Union went to Regina Walsh. Gold medal for French, Patron Joern Wiebe went to Harriet Bennett Lenane. Gold medal for Irish went to Harriet Bennett Lenane, John Ring and Emily Ahearne. Gold medal for Maths, Patron Lismore and Cappoquin Credit Union went to John Ring. Gold medal for LCVP, Patron Pollard Electrical and Communication went to Ronan Barry. Gold medal for LCA, Patron Thomas Overlander went to Peter Whelan. Gold medal for Creativity, Patron Orla Flynn went to Abbie O’Shea. Gold medal for Academic Achievement, Patron the Board of Management went to Elaine Hennessy, Louise Hallahan and Aoife Power.

SPECIAL AWARDS

Special awards this year were presented as follows: Overall student of the year, patron Anne Fitzgerald was presented to Emily Ahearne. The Community Service Award was presented to Mr Tom Murphy. The Community Achievement Award was presented to Ms Susan Cronin. The Student Community Service Award was presented to Laura Houlihan. The Lifetime Contribution to Education was presented to PJ Dolan, Catherine Toomey, Mary O’Brien and Joan O’Mahony.

A Special Achievement Award was presented to Stephen Bennett, Shane Bennett, Michael Kearney, Cian Leamy, David Prendergast, Colm Roche and to Roisin Cahillane and Jessica Glavin for their All-Ireland successes. The Highest Achiever in Junior Cert with Patron Tom and Marie Cavanagh this year went to Aisling Bukulin. The Highest Achiever in Leaving Cert with Patron Tom and Marie Cavanagh this year went to John Ring. The Hall of Fame Award for 2013 was presented to Mr Paddy Lavelle.
