Bringing in an estimated 5,000 visitors a year, it is clear that Mitchelstown Golf Club has become a large attraction which brings visitors to the area.
This figure is based on non members who visit Mitchelstown to enjoy the 18-hole golf course and does not include any of the 350 adult members who would come from as far away as Cork city, Glanworth, Kildorrery, Galbally, Fermoy and Kilworth for the course.
Speaking to The Avondhu, the President Billy Murphy said that the club contributes a lot to the local economy and when golf enthusiasts are looking for holiday destinations, a good golf club is high up on their list of priorities.
"The golf club is a substantial contributor to the local economy and a significant resource to the town. We have six employees and a substantial spend on various products and services in the area.
"In fact, I think it's a much underrated resource. When people look to access a town, in terms of what it offers, they look at sports facilities and clubs and having a full scale quality golf course ticks an important box," the President said.
In the current climate, many clubs are struggling with membership and in light of this, Mitchelstown Golf Club made a number of changes to their rates and categories.
One of the most forward thinking of these, is that rates are now banded according to people's distance from the club, so that expensive travel costs are taken into consideration.
"Reduced rates apply to anyone outside 30km. The juvenile rate has been effectively halved, so hopefully families will see this as a positive step," Billy told The Avondhu.
