Lára Ní Dhálaigh from Fermoy and Deirdre Ní Dhonnchadha, Ráth Chairn, Co Meath, both students at University College, Cork, took the top prize at the recent final of Comórtas Díospóireachta Gael Linn, the annual Irish language debating competition for third level students. The event took place on Saturday, 2 November, in Killarney, Co Kerry, during the annual Oireachtas na Samhna festival, where hundreds of students convene each year.

Four teams participated in the final - UCD, UCC, NUI Galway and University of Ulster. The topic for the debate was ‘Ba chóir deireadh iomlán a chur le híocaíochtaí dól do dhaoine faoi 25 bliain d’aois’ (All dole payments to under 25’s should be stopped!) and each speaker had seven minutes in which to make his or her points.

Lára and her team mate Deirdre, were awarded the Gael Linn/Irish Times Trophy along with €100 each from Antoine Ó Coileáin, CEO, Gael Linn who said the debates were proving increasingly popular with students.

"It is a positive sign that students are making the language their own,’ he said.
