Friday, November 1st was another momentous night for the Rathcormac Gun Club. The 2013 longest tail competition turned out to be high on sentiment and very fitting for one of the original founding families.

Tradition dictates that the longest tail competition takes place on the opening day of the season, the competition is open for everyone to attend and is very much a social gathering for those interested in country sports in general.
Attendance this year was higher than ever, all neighbouring clubs were in attendance and participants travelled from as far south as Kinsale, Youghal to the east and Clonmel to the north.

The event would not be possible without our sponsors, these include Lindsey Carlisle, Co Antrim; Dr Douglas Butler, Co Tipperary; Connolly RedMills, Co Kilkenny; Paudie White, Carroll’s Mountain Shooting Supplies, Broadford, Co Limerick; Pat Hayes Country Store, Mallow and Rick Nunez, California, USA.

Another addition to the event this year was Fermoy Game Gun Club also ran their confined competition as part of the event, this brought an extra dimension to proceedings and we would be happy to welcome any other clubs who would like to be included next year.

The open competition was for the Tom Hutch Cup. Tom was one of the original founders and would have taken great pride in that fact the competition was won by a young man with a great passion for the sport, Paul Connolly-Murphy from Mitchelstown, a member of the Lazy Dog Gun Club, Knocklong, Co Limerick.

The confined competition was for the prestigious Michael Drinan Cup. The Drinan family have been synonymous with the Rathcormac Gun Club since its inception and are still active today.

Therefore it was very fitting that the Michael Drinan Memorial Cup was won by his brother, John Drinan. John has a long association with the club and in the 2011/12 season, was presented with a memento acknowledging 40 years of shooting in Rathcormac.

On presenting the winning cup, Michael O’Donovan, club chairman, remarked on how appropriate that the cup, commissioned to honour the late Micheal Drinan, would be presented to his brother, John Drinan. He also thanked the landowners for their kind permission to shoot over their lands.

The event was closed by thanking everyone for attending and wishing everyone a safe shooting season.
