On this Saturday night, November 16, Kilworth Community Council launches 'Fifty Years & More' - a history of its endeavours to promote the development of community in the parish over the last five decades.
Founded in 1959, the council can boast of many achievements and numbers among its successes the ground-breaking Kilally and Downing/ Ballinrush Water Schemes, the Market House and Arts Centre, the Community Hall, the Sports Complex, the Pitch and Putt, the Village Park and Heaphy Grove housing.
The history tells the story of all these enterprises and pays tribute to a host of Kilworth people who have now passed to their eternal reward. Their contribution is highlighted in this beautifully produced 150 page book and their photographs are interspersed throughout. There can be little doubt that this publication, with its magnificent front and rear covers produced by Fiona Turley, will solve the problem of Christmas gifts for a great many people, and not least for those who have relations abroad.
Dr Pat O'Connor was ideally positioned to author the book, having taken a degree in history at UCD and as schoolboy, principal of Kilworth NS and one time chairman, secretary and treasurer of Kilworth Community Council, he was witness to a great many of the events and occasions he deals with in the book.
The launch and reception takes place in the Community Hall at 8.15pm after evening Mass and a highlight of the evening will be Pat's short review of the last fifty years of Muintir na Tíre in Kilworth, illustrated with some of the photographs featuring in the book and with film clips too of many of the characters mentioned - including those who attended at the opening of the Craft Centre by Minister Des O'Malley in 1983.
