The local drive to support the great work of Cork Penny Dinners has begun again in the region. The drive is being spearheaded by John Ryan and Emer Buckley whose efforts on behalf of the charity proved a great success last year and was much appreciated.

They plan to place collection boxes for non-perishable food items, toiletries and all other items that can be put to good use, in local stores in Ballyhooly, Castletownroche, Glanworth and Kildorrery and are appealing for all support to help the less well off this Christmas.

They're also seeking cooking apples as, apparently, they're in big demand by the charity who use them in cooking and baking.

Penny Dinners is one of Cork's oldest charitable organisations, dating back to the 1840s. Their aim is to give everyone who calls to their centre a hot nourishing midday meal. People in need are also given sandwiches and fruit to take away as an evening meal. There's an open door policy and the welcome is warm. They're open seven days a week all year round, including Christmas Day.
