Fermoy Meals on Wheels has benefited from no less than three donations from local groups. Cheques were presented on Thursday last by the Fermoy Bridge Club, Fermoy Golf Club and Retired Primary Teachers Group.

The Bridge Club ran a charity event at their club to raise their €1,000 donation. In thanking them for their kind gesture, chairman of the board of the centre, Seamus Aherne said it was wonderful that they'd thought of them.

"We run at a loss. We can only charge the elderly a certain amount. Food has gone up," he explained.

John Mulvihill, captain of Fermoy Golf Club said they'd decided to keep it local when it came to supporting a charity this year. He explained that the money was raised over two days, with the seniors giving up their own competition for the day on the Thursday, raising €800 through their efforts, with the remainder of the €4,500 they raised coming from the ladies and gents regular competitions on the Friday.

Seamus Aherne again thanked him on behalf of the board, saying it was a "wonderful" donation, which he assured would be spent solely on the Meals on Wheels Service.

Next up, it was the turn of the Retired Primary Teachers group. They raised their donation of some €700 through a coffee morning and cake sale held at the centre.

Offering them sincere thanks, Seamus Ahern told those present the teachers group had a long association with the centre, having set up a homework club there through which they helped many children in the time it operated.

TEAM EFFORT

Fermoy Meals on Wheels operates all year round, three days a week, Monday, Wednesday and Friday from the community resource centre. Their in-house cook, Sharon Browne and her team of staff and volunteers ensure the meals and cooked, packed and are ready for delivery by their volunteer drivers. All products used in their meals are sourced and purchased locally.

The service, supported by the HSE, was designed to provide nourishing meals for mainly elderly people, or those recovering from an illness or just out of hospital that are unable to prepare a proper cooked meal for themselves.

Like many community services, they actively fundraise throughout the year to help defray the costs associated with running this important service as they endeavour to provide value for money to their clients.

"We are so very grateful to everyone who donates to Meals on Wheels and we offer sincere thanks to the local community groups and organisations that fundraise for us. This is a wonderful service and grateful thanks to all the volunteers, ladies and gentlemen, who give of their time and support to this very special service within our community," said Jacinta McCormack, community health worker at the centre.

By way of saying 'thank you' to all their volunteers and those who have donated throughout the years, the board of management, Sharon Browne and the staff at the Resource Centre cordially invite them to attend a special 'Christmas Cheer' coffee morning in the kitchen at the centre at 10am on Thursday, December 12.

If you or someone you know would like to avail of the Meals on Wheels service, contact Fermoy Community Resource Centre on 025-32962 for further information or call into the centre on Monday/Wednesday/Friday morning and have a chat with their cook.
