The recent unexpected death of a young student in Mitchelstown has prompted a community response to raising awareness about suicide locally and next Monday, November 25, there will be a talk on suicide awareness in The Firgrove Hotel.
Organised by Community Drugs Worker, Mary Mackesy, the free talk is open to everyone, particularly for young people and their parents.
Guest speaker Ger Rynne from Console, will speak about loss, bereavement and grief, how people react to the death of someone close to them, the risk factors and warning signs for suicide and resources that people can turn to.
Console was set up in 2002 and it is a national organisation supporting people in suicidal crisis and those bereaved by suicide, through professional conselling, support and helpline services.
They have centrescountrywide and can also be contacted through their freephone helpline 1800-201890 and by visiting their website www.console.ie.
Mary told The Avondhu that seeing young people from Mitchelstown trying to come to terms with the death of their school mate in September, triggered the need for the community to do something proactive to address the issue of suicide and loss.
She added that often in times of grief, people will turn to alcohol or substance abuse and if any young person finds themselves or someone close to them in this situation, they can contact her for a free and confidential service on 086-0439702.
A group of young people from Mitchelstown Youth Cafe are also organising a walk in the town for suicide awareness on Sunday, December 1. See next week's Avondhu for further coverage.
