Jobs were high on the agenda last weekend at the 66th Labour Party Conference in Killarney, where the Minister for Research and Innovation Sean Sherlock stressed the importance of the reform process underway in the research sphere, as key to creating and sustaining jobs over the next number of years.

Minister Sherlock, who was tasked by An Taoiseach to handle the Government's response to the social enterprise sector, stressed that different processes in Government departments are already taking advantage of social clauses and he expressed a hope to add to those positive measures soon.

He also highlighted the measures being driven to encourage female entrepreneurs through the Competitive Start Fund, worth up to €50,000 per entrepreneur.

“We are bringing money to the table to encourage females in enterprise to take more risks. We are moving beyond the platitudes and putting money on the table,” said the Cork East TD.

“Today we are creating 1,200 jobs per week. At the fall of the last administration, we were losing 1,600 per week for three years. The total number of people in the labour force is up 16,300 over the year. JobBridge is having a positive effect on getting young people into work and over 20,000 have taken up internships with 9,000 companies.”

The recent agreement on Horizon 2020 was also on the agenda, with Minister Sherlock saying that they are shifting the paradigm of what research institutions like UCC and CIT do with industry and what their end results are.

"It is an unprecedented investment of €300m by industry and Government in establishing these research centres, like the MAREI Institute based in Ringaskiddy, which created 77 jobs directly only last week," Minister Sherlock said.

“These are jobs and reforms that will benefit the jobs of the future for the scientists and researchers of the future. It is an exciting time to be involved in such a sector that faces many challenges but also a wealth of opportunities," he added.

Over 100 motions on a range of issues from employment and economic topics to social and equality motions were heard at the conference and delegates from all over Cork attended the two day conference.
