If you're a pipe and slippers person then Kerin's Bar in Fermoy probably isn't your scene. If however, you fit into the night owl category and really come alive after dark, then this establishment is right up your street.
A popular meeting spot in Fermoy for generations, Kerin's continues to have cross-generational appeal and we saw this at first hand last Saturday night when proprietor, Aidan Kerin opted for a 'good old days (nights)' theme. As with any event you're trying for the first time, success isn't guaranteed, however on this occasion, management hit this target as the bar was packed to capacity.
Staff at Kerin's have to be allrounders as orders vary greatly from the pint of plain to a bewildering selection of cocktails - many with rather risque titles. The kegs and bottles got a fair draining last Saturday night as the party continued until late. Veteran performers, Jimmy O'Donoghue from Glocca Maura and former Zodiac's supremo Mick Hayes, belted out all manner of tunes and only when the fingers were sore and the throats hoarse did they wind down. After that part of the show, it was the turn of DJ Stevie to keep the good vibe going.
Lots of old faces made the effort to relive the glory days - with considerable success. Remarkably, the age groups present ranged from 18 to 80. The bottom line was that everyone had a mighty time and the occasion kick started what Aidan and company hope will be a hectic party season for this popular bar.
