After years of it being talked about, at long last the old viaduct in Fermoy is to be upgraded and developed as a public amenity, allowing people to access the bridge and enjoy the spectacular views it affords.

Avondhu Blackwater Partnership this week applied to Cork County Council for planning permission for works to the viaduct in Carrigabrick. The old railway bridge is a protected structure. It's still part owned by Iarnrod Eireann as does Cork County Council. They had a structural survey of it done prior to the plans being drawn up.

ABP want to remove a concrete block wall at the western side of the viaduct, repair and repaint the existing railings and build new guardrails. It also wants to add seating and entry gates and put in pathways.

They are sourcing EU funding to develop the project in conjunction with the county council. Given the council's support of the project, it's unlikely the planning application will face any obstacles.

The viaduct, spanning the Blackwater, is a striking local landmark,  made famous by the 1966 World War One film 'The Blue Max' in which a stunt pilot flew the plane under the smallest arch. Filming took place in 1965 while the Mallow-Waterford railway line was still operational. The line closed two years later.
