A night time navigation rally, which took place in the Glenduff, Kilworth and Araglin areas over one December weekend, caused a flood of angry phone calls to gardai. As many locals were not informed of the route being taken and the timing of the event, confusion arose with many irate locals complaining on the levels of noise experienced and concerns over safety issues. One woman, speaking to The Avondhu, claimed she “thought they were joyriders or something. We weren’t informed at all…”. One pedestrian in the Glenduff area, while walking home late Saturday night, allegedly had a near miss with one of the event cars. Gardai were set to investigate.

There was a fortunate escape in Watergrasshill, when an artic truck which had been travelling towards Cork, veered across the road, striking the lounge section of The Fir Tree public house. Thankfully the driver of the Hennessy Transport vehicle was uninjured and nobody else was involved. A garda spokesperson commented that “It was lucky no pedestrians were walking past the pub at the time. It was 7pm and normally someone would be making their way up to the post office to do the Lotto”.

RTE’s Crimeline was set to feature the cases of three people from Fermoy, who had been missing for well over a year. Locals had termed the area ‘the Bermuda Triangle’, due to the disappearances and gardai hoped that the nationwide exposure would bring progress in the cases. The first case saw the disappearance of William Fennessy, last seen in his Daihatsu Charade in March 1990. While in April 1991, married couple Conor and Sheila Dwyer, left their home in Chapel Hill, never to be seen again.

‘Godspell’ was staged in Lismore, a joint production between the town’s CBS and Presentation schools. Under the direction of Brendan Dunlea and Valerie Murphy, this rock Gospel, saw John O’Brien play John the Baptist, John Paul Grey as Judas, Shane Goulding as Jesus, with Jan O’Sullivan, Liz O’Hara, Stuart Barry, Enda Ormonde and Nora Roche also playing key roles. Musical direction was by Deirdre Foley, with accompaniment by musicians Bunny Neligan, Martin Ryan and John Ahern.

Fermoy Image Improvement Group’s annual awards ceremony was held in the pitch & putt pavilion, with a large crowd present. Michael Riordan, Riordan’s SuperValu generously handed over a cheque for £500, to be used for the further enhancement of the town, in the form of hanging baskets. Fr Twomey acted as MC for the night, as well as presenting the awards. Some winners in the ‘Gardens of Distinction’ category were: Joe Kearney, Carrignagroghera; Mr J Fox, Devlin Street; Ms Hennessy, Duntaheen; the Geriatrics’ Association, Mary Potter Crescent; Mrs Hayes, Sean O’Brien Park; Mrs Brady, St Joseph’s Square; Eileen Nyhan, St Colman’s Park; Prendergast family, Uplands Estate. Sponsors of the awards included The Avondhu, Silver Pail Dairies, AIB and Fermoy UDC.

The final of the North Cork junior A hurling league, between Fermoy and Kilworth, ended in a draw, 3-9 apiece. The game, played in Fermoy, saw the home side play with a slight breeze in the first half, however a Pat Greehy goal saw Kilworth lead at the break on a scoreline of 1-4 to 0-5. A Sean Carey green flag for Kilworth shortly after half-time saw the home side in trouble, however goals from T Flynn and S McGrath pegged the lead back. With Fermoy now seemingly emerging as favourites following a goal from I O’Callaghan, Pat Greehy with his second strike brought Kilworth back into the game. A point from an Aidan Kenny free, the last puck of the game, saw Kilworth secure a deserved draw.
