There was a large seizure of tobacco in Mitchelstown on Saturday when a UK registered car was stopped on the M8 by Gardai and officers from Revenue's Custom Services.

Arising from the swoop, a non-Irish national man in his 40's was questioned and a file is being prepared for the DPP.

60,000 'Capital' cigarettes and 45 kilos of 'Samson' tobacco with a total retail value of €46,800 were seized at around 7am on Saturday morning as was the man's vehicle. This would represent a potential loss of €36,972 to the exchequer.

The Avondhu understands that customs officers have been monitoring the Mitchelstown area for some time.
