There was a frighteningly close call for a woman from Mitchelstown this weekend, as an object thrown from the bridge on the Cork side of the toll booth at Watergrasshill, hit the windscreen, which almost caused the driver to swerve out of control.

The woman, who does not wish to be named, was driving from Cork to Mitchelstown at around 9pm on Saturday night with two young children under the age of 12 with her in the car. As the object hurtled towards the windscreen, the bang the woman said, was so loud that 'it was like a bomb had hit the car'.

She had noticed three young guys on the bridge ahead and as she drove past the bridge, a large item akin to a basketball in size, came crashing onto the windscreen.

The woman, who told The Avondhu that having seen the three lads on the bridge, she had been 'somewhat prepared for something to happen'. Luckily she didn't swerve the car out of control, but instead slowed down and pulled in.

The Gardai were alerted, but personnel attached to the Glanmire Garda Station did not get to the scene because the incident happened at Meenane, Watergrasshill which, The Avondhu understands, was 'outside of their jurisdiction'.

She said the children were hysterical as they got a terrible shock. She waited for 40 minutes and eventually, felt she was left with no choice but to drive back to Mitchelstown with a severely damaged windscreen.

The woman said that she felt 'let down' that she had to wait 40 minutes with two hysterical children in the car.

"What happened to us really was terrifying and I don't want to see it happen to anyone else. I would tell people to be extra vigilant on the roads, because if I hadn't noticed the lads on the bridge, chances are I would have swerved and gone off the road," the woman told The Avondhu.

Gardai in Fermoy who are investigating the incident say that they are treating the incident most seriously and that what occurred was an offence under Section 14 of the Non Fatal Offences against the Person Act 1997.
