Great win by Fermoy Lionesses – hat-trick for Leah Lyons

A fantastic performance by all of the Lionesses and a great win which now sees them lying second on the table going into the Christmas break in their first year in division 2.

The Fermoy Lionesses welcomed the ladies of New Ross to the showgrounds last Sunday in harsh conditions. The match took time to get going with injuries at the beginning of the game, which stalled play. However, the Lionesses started to exert their dominance, particularly at scrum time, as the match developed.

The rain meant conditions favoured keeping the ball in tight and the Lionesses' forward line fought hard to keep possession and drive forward, leading to their first try from prop Leah Lyons which wasn't converted. The Fermoy women continued their dominance through to the second half and any breaks by New Ross were quickly dealt with. Continued power in the scrums and fierce driving forward lead to Leah crossing the line for her second try, again unconverted.

As the rain worsened, the Lionesses held their nerve and a fantastic maul took them from beyond the New Ross 5 metre line and over the try line with Leah Lyons finishing yet again for her third try of the day. A fantastic performance by all of the Lionesses and a great win which now sees them lying second on the table going into the Christmas break in their first year in division 2. Happy Christmas to our supporters, coaches and sponsors.

YOUTH RUGBY

With our U14s and U18s having a rest weekend, only our U16 squad were scheduled to play a League match at home against Muskerry. Early Saturday morning it was clear that gale winds and driving rain were going to make for horrible match conditions so with consent from Muskerry, the match was called off.

Muskerry have agreed to play the fixture on Saturday, January 4 in Fermoy with a 12 noon kick-off. Training for U16s tonight at 7.30pm and it resumes on Thursday, January 2 at 7.30pm in preparation for the rescheduled Muskerry game.

Our U14s host neighbours Mitchelstown in a friendly in Fermoy this Saturday. Players are asked to be togged out by 10am. This would be the last match of 2013 and training resumes on Thursday, January 2.

Fermoy RFC Youths will travel to Thomond Park on Friday, December 27th to watch Munster play Connacht in the RaboDirect Pro12. The cost for a ticket, bus, and refreshments is €15 and is payable tonight at Thursday night training to Billy Mulqueen in the clubhouse. Seats on the bus are limited so it's first come, first served. Provision timetable for the day is to leave Fermoy Showgrounds by bus at 4pm, match kick-off at 7.15pm, and home in Fermoy by 11pm.

Finally, thanks to all who supported our teenage disco last Friday night in SG1 Fermoy and a special word of thanks to the staff at SG1. Proceeds from the night went to our club defibrillator fund.
