News that the deadline for submissions to the public consultation process on cyberbullying has been extended to the middle of next month, has been welcomed by Tallow Labour Councillor John Pratt.

"It gives people in West Waterford extra time to make submissions to the public consultation process on cyberbullying that is currently underway. Feedback from this process will directly feed into the work of the expert panel established by Minister Pat Rabbitte to examine how to tackle the issue of cyberbullying and online harassment," he pointed out.

"Obviously this is an issue that's of huge interest to families, educators and young people across west Waterford, so news that the original deadline of February 28 is being moved back to March 18 in order to accommodate as many views as possible, is very welcome. The fact that it was announced this week, with Tuesday being Safer Internet Day, is very appropriate," he said.

"The consultation process is a valuable opportunity for members of the public to contribute to the debate around cyberbullying. The issue can only be tackled and resolved properly if we hear the views of those who are directly experiencing this type of aggressive online behaviour."

"As a parent, I am familiar with the fears that many local parents have about the dangers posed to our children by the online world and of the potential problems of bullying and harassment that can ensue on social media sites. I would encourage as many members of the local community as possible to submit their views on this issue over the next few weeks and to engage with this important exercise. Submissions can be made either via post or online through the Department of Communications website," he said.
