With less than a week to go until the opening night of Mitchelstown Musical Society's performance of 'All Shook Up', the excitement was palpable at the launch on Saturday last.

While many people are excited about the new show, being quite different to shows from the past few years, any doubts that people had were quickly cast out, with a wonderful performance by the cast members at the launch.

The sneak preview of the music that lies in store at this year's musical gave many present goosebumps, as they listened to the group sing in harmony under the guidance of musical director, Sarah Dewhurst and chorus mistress, Noreen Helen. Using the music of Elvis Presley, the show promises to be funny, entertaining and has themes and storylines that everyone can relate to.

The launch was held in the upstairs of Reidy's SuperValu, which is home to the Mitchelstown School of Music, Arts and Drama. The food and refreshments were kindly provided by SuperValu.

Tickets for the opening night on Tuesday, February 18 have already sold out and tickets for the Saturday night performance are becoming scarce, so people are urged to secure their tickets fast to avoid disappointment.

SUPPORTING LOCAL

Speaking on the night, president of the Mitchelstown Musical Society, Seanie Chamberlain spoke about how the society has changed over the years, but that it's great to see new faces coming in to join them every year. He added that their show depends on the support of the town's business people, so he appealed to people to shop local and give something back to the local business people in the town.

Chairperson of the society, Maria Murphy thanked everyone who made the launch a success and also everyone who helps out in any way with the musical, particularly the families of the cast members who are left at home to cook dinners, check homework and do housework, as the cast members flock to the town hall week after week for rehearsals.

She gave particular mention to Alan Reidy and Jason O'Connor of Reidy's SuperValu, Aslam Amin of Mitchelstown School of Music and Arts, Mitchelstown Lion's Club, The Avondhu for their support, director Kevin McCormack and choreographer Jenny Hoare.

Director Kevin McCormack commended all involved for their hard work, saying that it's a massive commitment being in a show like this. He said that the sense of community, friendship and closeness between all of the members is clearly evident and is something they should hold onto.

Councillors Kevin O'Keeffe and Frank O'Flynn were also at the launch and both commended the society for all of their hard work, as they look forward to this year's show.

As the days count down until February 18, the CBS hall is being transformed into a scene from a small 1950s town in America by Brian Roche, John Courtney and a small army of helpers. Maria said that they wouldn't be able to bring a show of such a high standard to Mitchelstown without the help of all of those who work behind the scenes. Well done to everyone concerned on what is sure to be another success.
