Labour councillor Noel McCarthy is calling on Cork County Council to establish a recycling centre to serve Fermoy and Mitchelstown. Pointing out that they are the only large urban areas in the county without such a facility, he says it means that people who want to dispose of various types of waste and recyclables have to travel.

A proper recycling centre, or civic amenity site as they are also known, would be advantageous for a number of reasons, he pointed out. The amenity itself would be of great benefit to householders, it would bring people into the area and therefore has the potential to benefit the local economy and it would create jobs.

Cllr McCarthy has tabled a motion for next week's monthly meeting of the Northern Area committee meeting in Mallow, calling on Cork County Council to identify a suitable site and proceed with establishing such a centre.

He also intends making it one of his election issues.
