A newly established enterprise based in Tallow, which was benefiting small industry in the West Waterford area and further afield, had been given the backing of West Waterford Development Partnership Ltd, as well as a massive thumbs up from small entrepreneurs. BMN Marketing, run by Connie Prendergast, saw the company help market local businesses in a cost effective manner. Having previously worked in London and for Dairygold, things were looking up for Connie and BMN, with companies coming to him “left, right and centre”, creating potential employment for a new position within the company.
Parents in Conna, Tallow and Lismore, were shocked following ‘serious scenes of underage drunkenness’ in Conna. Many teenagers congregated in the village to attend a disco being held in the community hall, hosted by the local community council. As the event was alcohol free, it was understood many of those intoxicated were ‘tippling’ even before they got to the village. With some sources saying they witnessed teenagers ‘out for the count’, boys and girls, as young as 13, were involved. Gardai, who had been in the village during the event, stated the ‘situation would be monitored closely in the future’.
A potential crisis which surrounded the Mitchelstown water supply was averted, as an encampment of Travellers began to leave the town’s southside reservoir, located at Kiltrislane. Having camped alongside the bored well, there were real fears due to the health hazard posed, that Cork County Council would have to cut supply, which in turn would effect the whole southside of the town. Having previously been camped in the Ballinwillin area, this latest episode was being viewed in a dim light. The Travellers had now moved to O’Connell Park, and local councillor, Conor O’Callaghan found it to be ‘yet another unacceptable situation’, saying this incident highlighted the need for a small well-managed halting site in the area. While Deputy Ned O’Keeffe referred to the situation as ‘utterly ridiculous’.
The parish of Glanworth, Ballindangan and Curraghagalla were celebrating the golden jubilee of the ordination of parish priest, Fr Patrick O’Hanlon. A native of Kilworth who was ordained in Fermoy on Sunday, February 14th, 1943, his first appointment was to Youghal for a period of 3 months, before coming back to Fermoy as Dean of St Colman’s College for 2 years. It was then back to Youghal as CC for 14 months, followed by an appointment in Ballyclough for over 15 years; Buttevant for 12 years; PP in Ballyvourney for 7 years, before being appointed PP in Glanworth. Celebrants at the occasion were Fr Declan Hennessy CC, Fr Pat Lawton CC and Fr Michael O’Keeffe.
A definite site had been identified for Fermoy’s proposed new fire station - unfortunately the funding to build the facility hadn’t yet been secured. Town manager, Ted Wixted told UDC councillors at their monthly meeting, that the new site was on part of the lands acquired by the council, located near the old Faber Castell plant. Cllr John Murphy asked when the town could expect to see the new station built, to be told that the funding was an entirely separate matter, which would have to come from the Department. As to where the project lay in terms of priority, Mr Wixted said that the city suburb of Ballincollig probably held sway, however Fermoy was certainly top of the North Cork list.
Nine students at Colaiste an Chraoibhin, Fermoy were eagerly awaiting participation in the All-Ireland team and individual hunter trials in Askeaton, Co Limerick. Under the expert guidance of English and Geography teacher, Paula McKeown (who had hunted with both Coolnakilla and Avondhu Hunt), the school were set to enter five individuals, namely Alan Walsh, Colette Barry, Brian Hannon, David Conway and Jonathan Sweeney - along with two teams of three. Team A consisted of David O’Meara, David Conway and Jonathan Sweeney, with Team B made up of Michael McSweeney, Michael Beary and PJ O’Donovan.
