Fermoy man Jim Heffernan won a silver medal for his nature shot at a major national photography competition in Kilkenny at the weekend. 600 images were assessed for the Irish Photographic Federation (IPF) National Nature Competition, a record entry.

Jim, who lives in Connolly Street, Fermoy, is a member of Blackwater Photographic Society, based in Mallow. He was presented with his silver medal from John Cuddihy, president of the IPF.

SURPRISE

Jim has been taking photographs for the past five years and particularly enjoys nature photography. His winning shot, of a gannet coming in to land, was taken in the Saltees in Wexford. He said he was "surprised" and "delighted" to win silver at the prestigious competition.

He's had two exhibitions of his photographs staged previously at the library in Fermoy. His winning photograph is currently part of an exhibition by Blackwater Photographic Society, running in Cork County Library's LHQ exhibition space, next to County Hall. It's running for a month.
