Parents ask motorists to slow down near Rathcormac school

There's a dedicated pedestrian priority zone, but even that hasn't stopped traffic from speeding near Rathcormac national school.

Members of Scoil Bhride's Parents Association are frustrated and anxious that, despite the measure, traffic isn't slowing, putting children's lives at risk.

In October last year, the pedestrian priority zone was put in, on the main road near the Cois Bhaile estate. Signs were also erected to alert drivers of the presence of the school nearby. The new school opened last Easter.

Parents Association members were so concerned about speeding traffic that they raised the matter with local councillors and Cork County Council's senior area engineer, Brendan O'Gorman. He added a further safety feature this week - highlighting in red the road surface in the pedestrian priority zone to alert motorists.

Parents Association Chairperson, Paula Lees, said they are grateful for the measure but are worried that motorists don't seem to be taking any notice. They've even been in contact with the NRA to see if the pedestrian traffic lights further up the village can be moved closer to the school to improve safety. They're awaiting a reply.

"We just want traffic driving through the village to slow down as they approach the school," Paula explained. They are also asking parents dropping off children at the school and others visitors, for safety reasons, to observe an unofficial one-way system in entering and exiting the school car park and grounds.
