The people of Fermoy and surrounding areas have not been found wanting in assisting those affected by the devastating typhoon which swept through the Philippines last year.

Eager to assist people at the other side of the world in their hour of need, community activist, William Hughes and a small group of dedicated volunteers decided to seek public donations for Trocaire who are on the ground in the Philippines. The response was fantastic and last week, William and friends were able to hand over a cheque for €4,768 to Trocaire representative, Janet Twomey.

Janet said it was a wonderful donation which would go directly to those who had lost everything in the natural disaster, she went on to say great credit was due to William and to everyone who gave so generously.

William said he was delighted to be able to help. He made a special point of thanking Noreen Doody and Mary Moloney (Clondulane) for their assistance.

"These women went out in all weathers collecting and should be mentioned, they did an incredible job" he said. Mossie McHugh (Watergrasshill) was another directly involved in the fundraising effort which was also supported by local businessman Dr Tomas Cavanagh.
