In the middle of all of the entertainment that was on offer in and around Fermoy on St. Patrick's Day, that most traditional form of children's entertainment - a puppet show - proved a quiet success for a local puppet group.
'Tell A Tale' Fermoy Puppet Group grew from a VEC funded project at Blackwater Day Centre two years ago. A successful performance at the Nano Nagle Centre in Killavullen spurred on the group, resulting in the St. Patrick's Day show at the Elbow Lane Inn, which went down a treat with the young audience.
The group made the puppets, wrote the script after Noel Quirke kindly provided them with the bones of it, and recorded their voices with the help of Duncan O Cleirigh of Blackwater Studios, Glanworth. Elaine Cronin was their guide and inspiration in producing the show in which they collaborated, deciding for themselves how their characters would develop. They took the storyline for the show 'True Love's Ways' from several different popular fairytales and films, to produce a lively and engaging show.
Maria Wood of the group says they are hoping to develop further and are interested in exploring the possibility of staging shows for playgroups and schools. Transport is a challenge they have to surmount, as the stage is so large as to require a van to move it to venues.
