All voluntary groups need to keep the money coming in and Watergrasshill Community Association is no different. An annual race night has proved a productive source of revenue and this year's event took place in The Fir Tree Bar on Saturday night, April 5.
There was a good crowd present, comprising mainly local activists who have a track record of supporting the association and its various projects. One of the most ambitious projects undertaken by the association in recent times has been the redevelopment of the old Church of Ireland building.
This important landmark, which operated as a place of religious worship for generations, is now the First Fruits Arts Centre. The centre has played host to a number of high profile artists and is steadily making a name for itself as an intimate venue for singers and musicians.
The other substantial premises under the care of Watergrasshill Community Association is the community centre which is in constant use throughout the year. However, like every other community centre in the country, running costs are substantial. Recently, it was deemed necessary to change over to a meter operated heating system and this has helped control spiralling energy costs.
The good news from last Saturday night, was that a healthy profit was returned with a fine selection of ads in the race night programme - Kepak Group were the main sponsors. Everyone who contributed can rest assured that all funds collected will be used constructively by chairman Robert Ryall and his hardworking committee. The raffle and the end of night auction race proved to be effective money spinners.
Those responsible for organising the race night are extremely grateful to management at The Fir Tree for making this comfortable establishment available. Finger food was served and music was by Breaking Dawn.
The level of support the fundraiser received was very encouraging and with a concerted effort Watergrasshill Community Association intend further enhancing their village.
Additional volunteers are always in demand and an open invitation is extended to anyone who might have a few hours to spare - volunteers meet outside the community centre every Saturday morning (at 10am) for a village clean up.
