Each year, thousands of people across the country are touched in some way by suicide and self harm and for the past five years, people have taken to the streets for the annual Darkness Into Light walk, to raise money and awareness for Pieta House. This year, for the first time, Mallow will become part of this international show of solidarity.

At 4.15am on May 10, the yellow T-shirts will be donned and the torches will be out, as participants will walk literally from the darkness of that hour of the morning into the brightness of the dawn, to symbolise the journey which people make from darkness into light when they use the services of Pieta House.

The darkness is symbolic of the darkness and despair which consumes people, before they are filled with light and hope when someone reaches out and shows them that there are other options.

The walk was officially launched by Mallow councillor and Cork County Mayor, Noel O'Connor and this year, Mallow will be one of three walks in Cork and the only one in North Cork. At the launch, candles were also lit as a way of remembering all those who have lost their lives. Mr O'Connor acknowledged that many people have unfortunately been affected by suicide or self harm directly or indirectly and he said that the event itself was both significant and simple.

Chairman of the Mallow Darkness Into Light committee, Eamonn Horgan from Doneraile, thanked all those who were making the event possible, including the Hibernian Hotel where the launch was held, Davis College, Electric Ireland who are sponsoring the event and all those who will be getting up in the small hours of May 10 to take part in the event.

Deputy Tom Barry complimented everyone involved on the huge amount of work that will go into this event and he is encouraging everyone to come out and support the walk.
