Restoration work at Saint George’s former church in Mitchelstown is back in full swing following the lifting of lockdown restrictions in the past week.
The €235,000 restoration of the roof will be completed by June, and this week, one of two 190-year-old gothic windows were removed for restoration.
“Saint George’s has been very successful with the grants we have received over the past two years since we began transforming the building into an arts and heritage centre,” chairman, Bill Power said, who is also project managing all construction on the building.
“The grants have made a whole range of work possible in the building, and we’re lucky to have found a fantastic team of craftspeople to work with us”.
One of the most recent projects to commence at Saint George’s is the restoration of two of its 190-year-old wooden gothic windows. This challenging work is being undertaken by local carpenter, James O’Brien, who has already restored the front double-doors and the vestry external door.
