Portrait of Dave ‘Rookie’ Roche part of Royal Academy’s annual exhibition

A portrait of Fermoy native, Dave ‘Rookie’ Roche, is to be exhibited as part of the Royal Hibernian Academy’s annual exhibition from May 27-August 9.

A legend both locally and further afield, the stories of Dave 'Rookie' Roche for his GAA achievements, singing abilities and work with ornate plaster restoration are known far and wide and now his story will be carried even further, as a portrait of the Fermoy native will be exhibited as part of the Royal Hibernian Academy's annual exhibition.

The 91-year-old, who now lives in Glanworth, has had a colourful life and he has regaled family and friends with his stories, songs and jokes for many years, but this year, his son Tim decided to commission Dave's nephew, Bernard Fleming to do a portrait of Dave for Tim's family home.

The striking portrait, which was achieved using charcoal and chalks is so realistic looking that it almost looks like a photograph .....
