Remembering May 1993 – Some Avondhu headline news

Some bizarre nocturnal activity on the streets of Glanworth had locals talking, while reports of the opening of a sex shop in Fermoy town were described as ‘a complete exaggeration’; while several students at St Colman’s College, Fermoy had a lucky escape when a safety barrier gave way while they were watching handball. Just some headline news from The Avondhu, back in May 1993.

Superintendent Eamonn Carey of Fermoy gardai, described as ‘a complete exaggeration’ certain reports in national newspapers that the opening of a sex shop in the town was thwarted, following a Garda raid. A planned raid had taken place on a flat in the town, which had led to much of the speculation. The reported seizure of ‘blue movies’ was however inaccurate, with Supt Carey telling The Avondhu that nothing of an offensive nature was seized.

Meanwhile, it was reported that a group of between 6 and 10 young men had ‘dropped their trousers and waddled down the main street of Glanworth’! Those who took part in ‘the midnight trot’ were visitors to the area who had arrived in the village by bus and the ‘cheeky act’ was a dare on their part.

Planning permission which was granted by Waterford County Council for a 25 house private development at Fair Field in the heritage town of Lismore, was objected to by local residents. Speaking at a meeting of the authority, Tallow councillor, Willie McDonnell said the objectors ‘felt this new development would interfere with their privacy and result in more traffic’. They were also opposed to the concept of an entrance to the site from New Street.

Eight students at St Colman’s College, Fermoy had a lucky escape when a barrier collapsed as they watched a handball match from the viewing gallery, sending them onto a concrete floor 11 feet below. According to principal Sean Cotter, the Leaving Cert students were taken to Cork Regional Hospital. Thankfully, the worst injury was a fractured finger, while one student was detained in hospital overnight for observation, being released the following day.

In brief - Cloyne Federation of Youth Clubs were anxious to finalise plans for its proposed project of a hostel and education centre at Glanworth Mill, with the organisation “negotiating the terms of the lease with Cork County Council and finalising architectural plans”; Ballyporeen handball maestro, Eddie Corbett claimed the All-Ireland 40x20 senior singles title in Roscommon, defeating Irish number 1 and title holder, Meath’s Walter O’Connor. The honour of being crowned ‘earl’ or ‘countess’ was once again being fought for in Kilworth village, with the annual festival reintroducing the contest, with three contestants putting their names forward: May McCormack (youth club rep), Denny Twomey (GAA rep) and Marianne Ahern (community council rep).

The Avondhu of May 13th, 1993 carried the final article from popular columnist, Hannah Hegarty, whose weekly ‘Remembering’ column had been well received since her first article in early 1990.

Fermoy’s Jim Phelan submitted the following for the enjoyment of readers: ‘Socialism: You have two cows. You give one to your neighbour. Communism: You have two cows. The government takes both of them and gives you the milk. Facism: You have two cows. The government takes both of them and sells you the milk. Capitalism: You have two cows. You sell one of them and buy a bull’.

Avondhu senior hurlers recorded a good win over Tracton, in a challenge match played in Blarney. Emerging victors on a scoreline of 2-20 to 1-10, Kilworth’s Noel O’Brien and Jody Hayes from Mallow were Avondhu's goal scorers on the day. Team and scorers: Paul Walsh (Clyda Rovers), Liam Hayes (Dromina), Peter Redmond (Mallow), Ollie Sheehan (Kilworth), Niall O’Donnell (Fermoy), Conor Hannon (Shanballymore), Michael Dunne (Kilworth), John Sheehan (Kilworth - 0-1), John O’Brien (Buttevant - 0-1), Brian O’Driscoll (Killavullen - 0-7), Noel O’Brien (Kilworth - 1-1), Ger Buckley (Dromina - 0-4), Jody Hayes (Mallow - 1-4), Brian Sheedy (Kilworth - 0-2), Martin Buckley (Dromina).
