Traditionally, not the most adventurous diners in the world, the Irish have still come a long way in a relatively short time. Increased opportunities to travel abroad has been a factor; another, is the presence of the 'new Irish' who have come among us. Along with their language and culture, they've brought new and exciting recipes.

VARIETY

Like most Irish villages, Kildorrery is now home to several nationalities and their positive impact was instrumental in setting up Kildorrery International Food Fair. Now an annual event, the fair took place last Sunday and attracted a fine crowd. The new location (Kildorrery community car park) also proved a hit - this site formerly housed Kildorrery Creamery.

Exhibitors were in place well in advance of the 2pm start time as they made final preparations to their expertly prepared dishes. The Baltic states of Lithuania and Latvia were represented, as were Pacific neighbours, South Korea and Japan, while Germany, Venezuela and Nigeria also had stands. The public were enticed to the venue by a fantastic aroma of exotic herbs and spices. Lots of free samples were distributed and those who produced the food were eager to learn what the public thought. Non meat eaters had the choice of sampling some vegetarian and vegan offerings.

RADIO KILDORRERY

Stalls were comfortably accommodated indoors and those that chose to, could dine al fresco. The fair was also used as a platform to promote Community Radio Kildorrery - another novel initiative by locals to spread the Kildorrery Gospel far and wide. According to those behind this project, they hope to be on the air before too long.

The venue, the fine weather and most importantly of all, the enthusiastic response of patrons, ensured the 2014 Kildorrery International Food Fair got the thumbs up from everyone in attendance.
