Remembering May 1993 – Some Avondhu headline news
The 13th Battalion FCA made Southern Command history at Kilworth Ranges in May 1993 when the unit took the honours in both the rifle and falling plates competition, the first time such a feat had been accomplished by the same outfit in the same year. O/C Comdt Dave Prendergast accepted the trophies on behalf of the unit, hopeful that they could take the All-Army title in June. While a unit from 3rd Cav FCA, under the command of Fermoy’s Comdt Niall Cremin, achieved 2nd in one of the competitions, in turn also qualifying them for the FCA finals.
Mary G’s Bar & Restaurant, located on the Limerick Road, Kildorrery, had changed management. Since opening its doors in 1992, the premises had proved a big hit locally. A 2 page Avondhu feature highlighted the comforts of the attractive premises. Since its opening, its Manchester-based proprietors, Barry and Mary Gilbody had set a high standard in food and service - new manager Nuala Sloane was now set to continue the trend, with customer service her number 1 priority. Sunday lunches were attractively priced at £5.95, with ‘the food, drink and company always top drawer’.
A scheme, organised and sponsored by Mitchelstown Business Association (MBA) in conjunction with Cork County Council, would see 25 new ‘heritage type’ litter bins installed in the town in time for the 1993 tourist season. To be located in Upper and Lower Cork Street, New Square and King’s Street, the MBA congratulated the council on their commitment, investing in quality street furniture. It was hoped that the local community council would give the go-ahead to have the town’s crest cast on each bin. Individual bins would be sponsored by businesses in the town and the MBA.
Dairygold chief executive, Denis Lucey quashed rumours of a possible ‘massive wave’ of redundancies at the company, at a Northern Division Council meeting held in Fermoy. Having been invited to speak to Authority members, Mr Lucey denied a statement by Joe Sherlock, pointing to large cuts in middle management, Mr Lucey saying the true figure would be in the region of 25 job losses. He also pointed out that since the merger of Mitchelstown and Ballyclough, the ‘true reduction in personnel was about 80 or so and the society’s employment stood at 2,400’. He further pointed out the notion of locating a new company headquarters in Cork city as absolute insanity, pointing out that North Cork would ‘remain the focus for administration’.
News snippets - A new drink ID scheme was launched in The Grand Hotel, Fermoy following several weeks of ‘painstaking work’ to put it in place - the launch was chaired by well known Fermoy publican, Albert McGonagle and the first 2 ID cards were presented to Maria Dingivan (Uplands) and Ian Clarke (Beechfield). Gardai in Mitchelstown were following ‘a definite line of enquiry’ in relation to acts of vandalism at the local Presentation Convent School, where windows were broken and drinking bottles were left strewn around the playground. While in Glanworth, the national school was broken into, with a computer, tape recorder, video and a quantity of cash (intended for a school outing) stolen.
