This weekend, 1,500 athletes from all over Ireland will make their way to Limerick to compete in the Special Olympics Ireland Games.

The opening ceremony in the People's Park will kickstart the games today (Thursday, June 12) and thousands of volunteers have been working tirelessly to ensure that every element of the games runs smoothly from now until Sunday.

All of the games are open to the public and people are encouraged to come along, enjoy the events and support the athletes who have worked so hard to get to the games.

Locally, the athletes going to Limerick to compete include Seamus Feeney and Emer Hayes from Fermoy and Kim Connolly and Niamh McCarthy from Glanmire. Many of the athletes will compete in more than one sport, so they have a busy weekend ahead.

Describing how much they are looking forward to the games, the athletes described the games as exciting, tiring and a great way to meet new friends.

Emer said that representing her region in the games feels fantastic and she's overwhelmed, while Kim Connolly said that her best memory of the Special Olympics so far was getting to meet the Queen when she came to Cork.
