Work has commenced on a new €200,000 astroturf project in Kilworth. Already fortunate to have a cluster of amenities close to the village, the astroturf, situated to the rear of Scoil Mhairtin National School, further enhances facilities in this progressive North Cork community.
Main contractors, Premier Pitches from Cashel, have commenced excavation work and weather permitting, they’re hopeful of making steady progress in the weeks ahead.
When complete, the 3G artificial grass surface will occupy a space of 65 metres long by 40 metres wide. It will be suitably drained and fully lit to allow for winter activity.
While fundraising will be required, the bulk of expenditure is being covered by grant aid from government and non-governmental sources.
HUGE BOOST FOR KILWORTH N.S. & WIDER COMMUNITY
Almost 300 pupils from the local school will have unrestricted access to the astroturf during the academic year.
According to principal Eileen O’Keeffe, this top of the range recreational space is a huge boost for everyone, from junior infants to sixth class. Eileen, who plans to retire by year’s end, said the new astroturf will be a tremendous asset that would benefit the school and local sports groups.
Board of management member Tom Pierce, echoed this sentiment, adding that it had been a team effort to get the project over the line.
“Everyone has worked really hard to make this project a reality and it’s a source of satisfaction that the contractors have moved in. It’s a win-win situation for both the school and the wider community in Kilworth,” Tom told The Avondhu this week.
