Extending credit where it’s due and recognising hard work and achievement is a hugely positive and essential factor in all walks of life. What a boost it is this week then to hear that the Fermoy Area Sports and Community Awards are being resurrected.

In the past, the awards were a major part of the social calendar and their demise was very much regretted. Major changes to the function room of The Grand Hotel contributed in no small way to their demise but the establishment of the Corrin Event Centre some years ago by Cork Marts, means the awards presentation event can once again become a major part of life in our community.

Due recognition must be given to the the McCarthy Insurance Group and to Fermoy Credit Union for their generous sponsorship of this exciting event. There will be ten awards in total including a Hall of Fame Award and three community awards and, out of these, will come the overall winner.

The next part is up to you, the public, to put forward nominations - those individuals, clubs, groups and associations that you think are deserving of such recognition. The awards will encompass the many villages and communities in and around the Fermoy area. Nomination forms will be available shortly. Watch this space!
