When John Spillane performed at The Village Arts Centre in February 2019, he spoke about writing songs for different places such as Ballingcollig (‘Johnny Don’t Go …’), Ballyphehane (‘The Streets of …’), Passage West and Cork City etc., and said: “Who knows – sure maybe we’ll have a song for KIlworth – if I’m back here again next year like”.
True to his word, he sang a song for Kilworth when he played the VAC again earlier this year. However, it was not his own composition but was a song written by Liam Howard.
John admitted learning and practicing the song on his trip to and from a gig in Armagh the night before.
The opening verse reads as follows:
“I oftimes stroll by Funcheon’s stream
Or fish the Araglin
In dreams of home in Kilworth
I go back there again.”
The full song will be published on the Entertainment Page of this week’s edition of The Avondhu, so why not check it out!
