They're young, talented and good looking - they're also brave and very skilful and with the trophies to prove it, they are now officially some of the best lifesavers in the country.

A group of Fermoy swimmers have played a key role in helping Cork becoming Munster and All-Ireland surf lifesaving champions. Highly rated by their instructors in Fermoy Leisure Centre where they train diligently, the youngsters are understandably chuffed at their achievements, which according to one of their instructors, Pop O'Hara, is just recognition for all their hard work.

"This is the first time Cork have won the Munster and All-Ireland surf lifesaving competitions, it's a fantastic achievement and we're all delighted for them," Pop told The Avondhu this week.

While most of us would think twice about taking on the might of the Atlantic ocean, the Fermoy youngsters are perfectly at home in the sea. During the course of both competitions they distinguished themselves in all aspects of lifesaving techniques.

The Munster competition took place in Inchydoney while it was on to Kilkee in Co Clare for the All-Ireland. Some of the disciplines included: run, swim and run, rescue boards and flags. Credit must also go to the instructors who've helped foster this natural talent - Pop, along with, Teresa O'Connor, Mary Dennehy, Doreen McCarthy and Kerenna Sheeran have all played their part in a memorable double for the Rebel County.
