On Friday night last, the people of Burncourt turned out in strength to acknowledge the contribution of recently retired principal, Pat O'Callaghan.

Pat spent the bulk of his teaching career in Burncourt National School - being appointed principal at the age of 22. During his 35 years at the helm, he was always keen to ensure pupils lacked for nothing when it came to facilities and the refurbished and expanded school that now serves the people of Burncourt is a fitting legacy for this native of Anglesoboro in Co Limerick.

Master of ceremonies last Friday was chairman of Burncourt Community Council, John Butler. John said, Pat was a community man at heart and his co-operation in making school property available for the annual gala day was typical of that generosity.

John introduced Rose Cleary, who gave great service to the board of management over the years. Rose went on to highlight, Pat's ability to organise and motivate people. He understood the importance of fundraising and his enlightened approach to education saw Burncourt N.S. become one of the first in the region to purchase a computer, she observed.

Former colleague, Christina Blake, told the large crowd that Pat treated every pupil fairly and did his utmost to assist any child who needed an extra bit of help. Parents' association representative, Mairead Bailey was equally generous in her tribute, describing Pat as someone who always put pupils first.

Board of management, chairman, Michael Leonard, commended Pat on his ability to ring-fence money for school projects and said he was very impressed by his hands on approach to the school's refurbishment project which was completed in full before Pat departed.

Michael said the school was in good hands with the appointment of of Sarah Walsh as principal. He concluded by wishing Pat a long and happy retirement which would allow him pursue his interests of farming and beekeeping.

Responding to the tributes, Pat said he had thoroughly enjoyed his time in Burncourt and having taught in Cork city for 2 years 'never felt the need to leave Burncourt National School'. He made a special point of thanking his teaching colleagues, the various boards of management and parents' associations, along with members of the clergy he had worked with. Thanking everyone for their kindness, Pat said the school would continue to prosper under the stewardship of Sarah Walsh.

Accompanying Pat at the event were his wife, Veronica, son, Seán and daughter, Emma. Following the speeches, presentations were made, photographs taken and refreshments served. The function also included a musical input from pupils as well as a video montage of Pat's teaching career. The event was very well organised and much appreciated by the fondly remembered 'Master' whose contribution to education in Burncourt has been immense.
