In a bid to increase community safety, a text alert system was launched in Curraghagalla last week in Roche's Bar.

The launch was well attended, as people from Curraghagalla and district areas tuned into what Garda Denis Motherway and Garda Andrew Geary had to say about how the scheme could benefit their area and increase safety and also community awareness.

Chairman Alan Peppard spoke about how supportive people have been of the text alert system coming into force in Curraghagalla, saying that they already have approximately 160 phone numbers signed up and they expect this to increase, as the scheme grows. He stressed that new people can join up to the scheme at any point, as every person on the scheme is another pair of eyes making sure that the community is safe.

The group have already made up 13 signs and these will be located at the various junctions and entrance points into the area, so that people will be aware that the scheme is in place, as soon as they enter Curraghagalla from any direction. It is hoped that these will be erected shortly.

Garda Denis Motherway commended the group for setting up the scheme, saying that their timing is perfect, as there is often an increase in crime and burglaries in the lead up to Christmas, so people should be extra vigilant.

He said that if anyone sees anything suspicious they should contact Mitchelstown Garda Station on 025-84833, who will then send a text to each person on the scheme, if deemed necessary. This means that if there is a suspicious vehicle in the area, for example, that people will know what to look out for and can alert the Gardai.

Garda Motherway added that people should ring in with any information, no matter how trivial they might think it is, as the onus is on them to make the call.
