Eibhlín Lonergan, a former student of Loreto Secondary School, Fermoy, has been awarded the best overall Irish essay in the Leaving Certificate exam for 2014. Her essay on emigration earned the Conna native an A1 in Irish. She received 8 A1’s overall – one of only nine students across the country to do so.

Her Irish teacher, Fionnuala O'Leary, said Eibhlín was a very capable student and was not a bit surprised that she received the top award. “She’s well read, and has a vast knowledge and understanding of the Irish language, so she would have had a brilliant essay. The work that she gave up during the year was always top rate. Her oral would be outstanding as well, her spoken language was of a very high calibre,” Ms O’Leary told The Avondhu.

She added: “Eibhlín was a very pleasant student to teach, who would be very grateful for any help in the language. She built on her learning process every day, she got something out of every class.”

Eibhlín’s younger sister Saoirse achieved similarly impressive results in her Junior Certificate this year, securing no less than 13 A’s in her exams. Bright futures ahead indeed!
