The comfortable surroundings of Vienna Woods Hotel in Glanmire was the setting for the premiere of locally produced/directed feature film, '59' - the brainchild of Girish Patel, a teacher in Colaiste an Chraoibhin, Fermoy.
The showing on Friday, October 17th last showing went down very favourably with an invited audience. The bulk of those present had some connection with or were involved in the making of the film which was shot in Fermoy, London and the west of Ireland.
Billed as a romantic drama, '59' centres around the hopes and dreams of three characters who hatch a plan to win a song contest that has a prize fund of €1m. The grittiest of the characters is Seamus, a not very likeable, but brilliantly played ex soldier, played by former defence forces member, Kevin Dolan, who in real life runs a successful catering company in Fermoy. Kevin makes light of his lack of film/stage experience, to turn in a thoroughly convincing performance.
HIGH HOPES
The film's musical score was very well received - again, credit for this goes to multi-talented Girish, who is a singer/songwriter of some repute. Girish said he was delighted with the premiere and took the opportunity to thank all those who came on board to help out. He also thanked Sallybrook Productions (Glanmire) where the film was produced and edited.
At this stage there isn't anything Girish or Sallybrook Productions can do for their 'baby' which has been entered in the Sundance Film Festival - however, with the necessary support and that all important slice of luck, we will be hearing a lot more about '59' in the weeks and months ahead.
