The five year community development plan for Kilfinane is now starting to take shape, after more than 60 people attended a public meeting in Scoil Pól last week.

Chairman of the Community Council, Tommy O'Sullivan said that they were delighted with the turnout and that there was a diverse representation of the community present, so that views and ideas from all corners were expressed.

Using the points of strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats, they looked at what Kilfinane has to offer, what things could be improved upon and what areas posed threats.

"We are in a prime location at the foot of the mountains and that is something we can build on," Tommy said, adding that the Ballyhoura bike trail is a great asset for the area, but if another one was developed at the other side of Kilfinane, it would further enhance opportunities.

The hostel was identified as a key asset, while the need for a community centre was highlighted.

"We encouraged people to shop local and support what we have, as some of the threats are that we would lose our Post Office or Ballyhoura, so these need to be supported if they are to be maintained," he pointed out.

He added that people described Kilfinane as a very friendly place with a lot of employment and that the meeting was very positive.

Cllr Lisa Marie Sheehy who attended the meeting said that a community centre and a youth cafe, or dedicated space for young people were the main priorities that came out of the meeting.

She pointed out that there are a lot of community buildings not in use, which could meet the needs of the young people from Kilfinane.

She added that the meeting also gave her the opportunity to see how she could play a role as a local councillor in helping to develop the five year plan.

Another public meeting will take place on December 2 and the venue will be confirmed closer to the date.
