Tyndall National Institute and Environment Laboratory Services Ltd are to develop a home water testing device, which will test for e-coli and other harmful contaminants and will be the first of its kind when completed.

The device is being developed as part of a Europe wide collaboration, which will see €6 million in EU funding being used to create ten new products.

The developers believe that the device will be able to deliver results within the hour, which is faster than current methods. As well as holding great potential for home owners, it will also be useful for those involved in the food, beverage and agricultural industries.

Tyndall CEO, Dr Kieran Drain, stressed that water is a primary natural resource and is a vital ingredient for everything we do in life.

"Recent events, as seen in the media, illustrate the importance we stress on a reliable and safe water supply. The SMARTER-Si project will enable people, for the first time, to test their own water supply and give peace of mind at an affordable price," he said.
