‘Schools Minor Repair Grant is badly needed for winter months’ – Matt McGrath
If things had gone badly and Christmas lights had failed to materialise in Fermoy, Cllr Noel McCarthy, as chairman of the Christmas lights sub committee, would have been in the firing line - as things worked out, it's congratulations all around for the poll topping Labour politician who has overseen one of Fermoy's most spectacular efforts ever for the festive season.
Speaking at last weekend's 'switching on' ceremony, Noel said the project had been a success, primarily because of community involvement.
COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT
"I was delighted to be involved, but great credit must go the people of Fermoy, in the case of those living in the vicinity of Barrack Hill (Oliver Plunkett Hill), there was a a fantastic effort to enhance their area, the same goes for the rest of the town, it's a success because people made it a success" Noel said.
Noel went on praise the other locations that have been illuminated: the cross of Cork Road, MacCurtain Street, Patrick Street and Pearse Square. He also acknowledged the effort of private individuals and business people in doing their bit to make Fermoy a beacon for the holiday period.
The upbeat sentiment was echoed by the progressive chairman of Fermoy Business Action Group, Adrian Godwin. Mr Godwin said the lights projected a positive image of a town that was fighting back on all fronts. He went on to highlight the reservoir of goodwill that exists in Fermoy and the importance of tapping into this goodwill.
Local schoolchildren, members of Fermoy Musical Society, Fermoy Concert Band, Cork County Council personnel, electrical contractors, An Garda Siochana along with DJs Timmy Raz and Ian O'Brien, all played a part in the various lighting projects.
