In a welcome and timely boost to businesses and shoppers in Fermoy, the reopening of the Mill Island coincides with the beginning of the free parking in car parks over the Christmas period.

Since last Monday, December 8, all car parks in Fermoy have been free of charge at all times, and will remain so until the new year. In addition, on the following two Saturday’s, two hours on-street parking will be provided free of charge. In accordance with by-laws, two hours is the maximum time vehicles can be parked in the same spot.

This comes as councillor Noel McCarthy will next week request that a deputation be heard at Fermoy Municipal District, by the Fermoy Business Action Group, on the topic of introducing two hours free on-street parking in Fermoy on a full-time basis.

Welcoming the opening of the car park, which has space for over 250 cars, and the free parking in the town’s car parks until the new year, Cllr McCarthy said it is an excellent incentive for people to shop locally this Christmas.

Cllr Frank O’Flynn too welcomed the free parking gesture, particularly the two Saturday’s where on-street parking will be free for two hours. He committed to continue the fight to have two hours free on-street parking introduced in Fermoy on a full-time basis.

This, he said, is to bring equality to the three towns in the municipal district, as Mitchelstown and Charleville already possess such free parking measures.
