Two local SPAR stores in The Avondhu area were amongst those awarded one of retail’s highest honours at the annual SPAR and SPAR Express 5 Star Awards.

The 15th annual 5 star awards ceremony at Killashee House, Co Kildare saw Shinnick’s SPAR in Fermoy and Burns’ SPAR, Rathcormac claim awards. Held in association with the Excellence Ireland Quality Association, these awards are only given to SPAR and SPAR Express stores that pass a gruelling year-long inspection, including unannounced audits and visits from mystery shoppers.

The Fermoy and Rathcormac stores were selected along with seven other Cork stores, who received special recognition for winning 5 star awards for five years in a row.

Malachy Hanberry, Sales & Retail Advisory Services Director, said, “SPAR and SPAR Express retailers are among the greatest in Ireland, and I am delighted to honour tonight their hard work and dedication to their stores they have shown throughout the past year.

“All year long these independent business people support their local communities, providing employment both directly in their stores and through local suppliers. The SPAR and SPAR Express 5 Star Awards are now in their 15th year and I am delighted to see so many Cork recipients among tonight’s winners,” he said.

The SPAR and SPAR Express 5 Star Awards Scheme is a rolling scheme where participants must undergo rigorous year long assessments across a range of categories including customer care, shop presentation, food safety and retailing innovation.
