Just when it seemed the festive season had run its race, along comes Women’s Little Christmas – a seasonal ‘add on’ that in theory is when the fairer sex divest themselves of domestic duties and let their hair down.
Otherwise known as, Nollaig na mBan, the occasion continues to be celebrated in this part of the country, with the ladies needing little encouragement to ‘hit the town’.
The event is a post Christmas boost for hostelries, especially restaurants, who were booked solid last Friday evening. From there it was on to ‘the local’ where friendly bar staff were on hand to serve the tipple of their choice.
A more agreeable tradition than the frequently messy ‘Twelve Pubs’ phenomenon, Women’s Little Christmas is a great exuse for another ‘girls night out’ and the gals we encountered on our travels were invariably upbeat and relaxed. It’s also a forum to formulate New Year’s resolutions, with some of the items covered including gym membership, healthy eating programmes and detoxing.
The last big ‘blow out’ of the seasonal holidays, Women’s Little Christmas is a cherished January date that seems certain to continue for a long time to come.
