Mitchelstown based rock band Mindriot’s new single which aims to raise awareness and funds for mental health, has attracted high profile attention since its release last Friday.
Their new song ‘Speak’ peaked at number one on Google’s rock chart, with all proceeds from the song going to Pieta House.
‘Speak’ has prompted people share the band’s message of speaking about problems across the internet by posting a picture of themselves with the word ‘Speak’ written on a page.
The song and its message were commended and shared by Bell X-1 whom the band supported at Indiependence last year, as well as other celebrities such as Keith Barry, Fair City’s Eric Lalor, former Cork hurler Conor Cusack plus Today FM and Red FM among others.
Mindriot’s vocalist Tony Gorry, said spreading awareness of mental health and suicide is something that is very important to the band’s members and they believe a simple approach can be most effective.
“I don’t believe in the politics of it and going to the Dail. I believe in speaking to someone for ten minutes each day. It is not going to cure a person, but it might get them through to the next day,” he said.
‘Speak’ peaked in the Irish chart at number 40 and has accumulated 25,000 hits on YouTube. Tony said the song has attracted attention across the globe, especially in America.
The band, once a four-piece, is now a three piece made up of Tony Gorry, Micheal Hoye and Steven Bartak. Mindriot first formed in 1992, they broke up for ten years and got back together two years ago. Next year they plan to release a new album and go on an English tour.
