A local GP has said there is a lot of ‘scaremongering out there’ surrounding news that adult measles was linked a number of public venues in Mitchelstown.

Dr Declan Herlihy, speaking on behalf of the LivingHealth clinic in Mitchelstown, confirmed to The Avondhu that two cases had been found in Mitchelstown and that another was presently under investigation. He said there has been a 2 month outbreak of measles in the Cork and Kerry region but stressed that the HSE have been managing the outbreak ‘extremely well’ and thus have prevented it becoming epidemic.

“There have been 38 cases in all, 35 of which were of non-vaccinated people – proving the effectiveness of the MMR vaccine. Patients at risk are those that have not been vaccinated and are in close contact with a case,” he said.
