John Hurley working as a Caregiver with Home Instead North Cork.

Pursuing your passion has led John Hurley to a job as a Caregiver with Home Instead North Cork, which he describes as “the best experience of my life working as a Caregiver – meeting the other wonderful Caregivers and the people I care for”.

From a very young age, John has had a passion for caring. He interviewed for a Male Nurse role at just the age of sixteen but was too young to be offered the position. As life progressed, John pushed his passion aside and worked in sports retail for almost twenty years but knew the Healthcare sector was for him.

Seven years ago, when John’s father suffered a stroke, John became his full-time Caregiver. John’s passion for caring reawakened and he decided to undertake healthcare modules in McEgan College, Macroom that he successfully completed with distinction and he has not looked back.

The Covid-19 pandemic has challenged the healthcare industry to its limits, but John believes in some ways it has also helped it.

Speaking about the pandemic, John says: “I reckon because of the pandemic, it has brought the level of care to a higher standard, i.e., use of PPE which benefits the person you are caring for and also protection for yourself. Before the pandemic, face masks were only worn in certain areas of care whereas now, masks along with gloves and aprons are a basic requirement for care.”

John finds End of Life Care the most rewarding because you feel satisfied that you have made the client feel as comfortable as possible and you have empathy for the family, as it is one of the most difficult times in their lives. John went on to say that the Thank You cards you receive from client’s families are very much appreciated.

John concluded: “I would recommend Home Instead as most carers I work with both past and present are exceptional and are a credit to the company. All the clients I work with are extremely happy with the care they received through Home Instead.”
