It's 10 years since Galbally senior citizens' group was set up and this significant anniversary was marked with a social function in Canon Hennessy Community Centre, Galbally recently.
Run by volunteers, the group provides an important social outlet for those who've retired but who still want to remain active. Arts and crafts, music, dancing, day trips, historical outings and the occasional visit to a hotel or restaurant are just some of the pursuits engaged in. Meetings are held on the third Tuesday of every month in Canon Hennessy Community Centre and new members are always welcome.
Given the group's taste for socialising, it was fitting that there was a story telling and musical component to their anniversary celebrations. Seanchaí duties were entrusted to John Carew from Lough Gur and John had a selection of tall tales to keep his audience entertained. Michael O'Regan and Mick Dunlea teamed up for the music and they supplied plenty of waltzes to keep dancers happy. Group chairperson, Mary Margaret Vallance and her fellow committee members, oversaw the catering arrangements.
CO-OPERATION & GOODWILL
Speaking following formalities, Mary Margaret thanked everyone who had contributed to the senior citizens' group over the 10 years - the group's success was built around active participation, co-operation and goodwill, she said. She went on to acknowledge the support of Hospital Family Resource Centre, the HSE and Martin Dineen, who does such an excellent job as caretaker.
Those who attended this most enjoyable gathering also found time to view an exhibition of photographs which chronicled the life and times of this vibrant, well supported and well run voluntary group.
