Valley Rangers B and Railway progress to Ned Barry Cup semi-finals

The commencement of football action, after an enforced layoff of 4 weeks due to the recent poor weather, saw a host of goals scored in the Ned Barry Cup quarter-finals.

At long last, after four weeks of inactivity due to the weather, we were back playing football again at the weekend. And what an amount of goals were scored. There were four Barry Cup quarter-finals and one Premier League game played, with a total of 32 goals scored in the five games.

Our roving reporter took in two cup games for us, while we covered the Lismore and Valley A game on Sunday. Many thanks to Michael for all his help.

There were no U17 League games played.

NED BARRY CUP

Lismore 7 Valley Rgs A 2

A game that had all the ingredients of a good cup game turned out to be no more than a stroll in the park for a Lismore side that was not at full strength, against a very disappointing Valley Rgs A team. When one considers Valley are the reigning league champions, much was expected of them on Sunday afternoon. We took in this game on Sunday.

Played at the excellent Blackwater Community School Complex and on a pitch that stood up well following the heavy rains, the conditions were ideal for the game. Lismore started the brighter of the two sides and it came as no surprise when Kieran Hayes had them in the lead on 10mns, following a Shane Bennett cross. Kevin O’Donoghue added a second ten minutes later and on 28mns Bennett scored direct with a free kick from outside the area. Valley came more into the game and deservedly scored with a minute to the break when Noel Earley headed to the net. We felt this was the score Valley needed to up their performance for the next 45mns, but it was Lismore who scored again after the restart, when on 75mns, Bennett scored from an O’Donoghue cross.

On 78 mns, John Noonan reduced the arrears, but two minutes later Bennett completed his hat-trick when he converted another free kick from outside the area. Reaney and Hayes both scored in the last few minutes to give Lismore a very easy victory.

As cup holders for the past two seasons, Lismore were favourites, but as a spectacle, this was not a cup game like we usually witness. Valley were not at their best and Lismore did not have to work too hard for this win.

Noel Earley and Alan Carr tried hard, as did Billy Carr and Shane Kearney, but the Lismore back four were excellent while Hayes gave another top class performance from midfield. Up front Lismore had the man of the match in Shane Bennett, and while scoring three times, he was a constant threat to the Valley defence throughout.

Lismore play Valley B in the semi-final.

Lismore: J Shanahan, S Flavin, A Landers, J Healy, E Walsh, B Landers, K Hayes, K O’Donoghue, S Reaney, S Bennett, D Ryan. Res used: P Quinn, C Tobin.

Referee David O’Sullivan had an excellent game, helped in no small way by two very sporting teams.

Brideview 6 Inch 2

Another high scoring game at Brideview Park with the home side proving too strong over the 90mns.

Inch opened the scoring on 10mns when Clint Galvin found the net. Brideview equalised when Michael Curley converted a penalty after Dave McInerney was fouled inside the area. William Curley added a second before the break to give the home side the lead at half-time.

In the second half Brideview proved to be much too strong for the visitors and goals from McInerney, Hickey and M Curley gave the home side a winning lead, before Leonard Byrne pulled a goal back for Inch. In the last minute, Chris Murphy scored a sixth for Brideview.

Even though short a few of their regulars, Brideview were much too strong for Inch and will now play Railway Ath in the semi-final.

Brideview’s victory see them in line for a hat-trick of trophies this season. Already Bolger Cup winners, leading the premier table with five games to play and in the Barry Cup semi-final, they are having a wonderful season.

Cappoquin 1 Valley Rgs B 3

Our roving reporter travelled to Cappoquin on Saturday night for this cup game and the game went ahead on an excellent pitch - credit here to the ground staff. It was wet and bitterly cold throughout the game.

Cappoquin had a tonic start after 5mns when a through ball from midfield was finished to the net by Shane Lambden. Valley equalised before half-time with a well worked team effort that saw William O’Neill score.

Valley took the lead on 55mns when the Cappoquin goalkeeper slipped when attempting to clear the ball and Valley’s Shane Cogan scored. Valley wrapped up the game on 73mns when John Cashman scored.

Both sides played very sportingly in slippery conditions, making it an easy game for referee Simon Drislane to handle.

Railway Ath 2 Castlebridge 2

(aet Railway win 4-1 on pens)

Our reporter travelled back to Cappoquin on Sunday afternoon to take in the cup game at Railway. He was not disappointed as we had a cup tie that had to be decided by the dreaded penalty shoot-out.

Railway went into the lead after 15mns when Ryan Duggan scored. Five minutes before the break Killian O’Sullivan scored with a header from a free kick, to give the home side a comfortable lead at half-time.

Six minutes after the restart Castlebridge pulled a goal back when a shot which hit both posts came out and was struck to the net by the inrushing Johnnie O’Sullivan. The visitors equalised on 70mns when Noah Diaz’s corner kick went directly into the net.

Railway were reduced to 10 players following a second yellow card. Extra time failed to add to the full time score and we then went to penalties, which Railway won 4-1.

Man of the match was Danny O’Keeffe who controlled the game from the middle of the field.

Congratulations to both teams for a very sporting game, and to referee Kieran Griffin who refereed the game very sensibly on a very good pitch.

Railway now play Brideview A in the semi-final.

MARI MINA PHARMACY PREMIER

Pinewood 6 Clashmore 1

The only league game played last weekend saw Pinewood join Clashmore in joint third place in the league table, with four league games to play and seven points adrift of leaders Brideview.

The home side led at the break with a Shane O’Meara goal. In the second half the floodgates opened with Keith Guiry back to his best, bagging four goals and brother Darren adding one. In the last 10mns John Murphy converted a penalty for Clashmore.

Overall the better on the day won, but while both teams are seven points behind the leaders, they have a game more played than Brideview and two more than Lismore.

DELEGATE MEETING

There will be a delegate meeting of the WW/EC League this coming Monday, 3rd March at Lismore House Hotel commencing at 8.30pm.

EURO 2016

The draw for Euro 2016 qualifying groups took place last Sunday in Nice, and the Republic of Ireland has been drawn in Group D, a group that includes Germany, Gibraltar, Georgia, Scotland and Poland. All the commentators agree it is a difficult group, with Germany the hot favourites to qualify outright. The second place appears to be between Poland, Georgia, Scotland and Ireland.

The group games will definitely see the “full” house signs at the Aviva for the visit of Germany, Scotland and Poland between September 2014 and October 2015.

The campaign begins on Sunday, September 7th when the Boys In Green travel to Georgia. The first home game is on Saturday, 11th October when the new boys, Gibraltar, are visitors. Three days later we travel to play Germany and then we travel to Glasgow to play Scotland on Friday, 14th November. Three of the four games in 2014 are away with only one home fixture. There will be no more competitive games until March 2015.
